Iraq has chosen "No Paradise If You Are Killed By A Woman," directed by Norwegian-Kurdish filmmaker Halkawt Mustafa, to represent the country at the 99th Academy Awards. The film's world premiere is scheduled at the Venice Film Festival. Starring Avan Jamal, it tells the story of Vyan, a female Peshmerga sniper who ventures to Mosul to rescue her younger sister from ISIS, confronting her past and present struggles.
Mustafa, who was born in Iraqi Kurdistan, stated the film is deeply personal and aims to honor women who fought for freedom. This selection follows Iraq's recent successes during the 2025-26 awards season, including a film that reached the Oscar shortlist. "No Paradise If You Are Killed By A Woman" is a co-production involving Hene Films, La Media, and The Chimney Pot, with True Colours managing international sales.
