Iranian Filmmaker Narges Abyar Captivates Hyderabad with Real-Life Inspired Drama

In November 2025, acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Narges Abyar visited Hyderabad to screen her film 'When the Moon Was Full' at the Iranian Film Festival. Abyar's film is based on real-life events that took place on the Iranian border, involving atrocities committed by extremist groups.

During her visit, Abyar spoke about the emotional challenge of bringing this story to life and the extensive research her team conducted to ensure authenticity. She also reflected on the challenges women often face in the filmmaking industry, noting that a woman has to work harder to prove herself. However, Abyar sees this as a strength, as women possess qualities like strength, endurance, and emotion that are central to her storytelling.

Abyar's love for Indian cinema began in her childhood, when she would watch old Bollywood films with her family. She fondly remembers popular actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Nargis, and Sridevi, whose snake dance from the film 'Nagina' remains extremely popular in Iran. Abyar's admiration for Indian cinema is evident in her own work, as she has even incorporated an Indian song from the film 'Sholay' in her 2016 film 'Breath'.
