Invincible's Tech Jacket Gets Major Gender Swap

Robert Kirkman, co-showrunner of the Prime Video series Invincible, has detailed a significant alteration made to the character Tech Jacket in season 4, episode 5. Originally a young man named Zach in the comics, the hero is now depicted as a young woman named Zoe. Kirkman stated this change was implemented to prevent the character from being too similar to the series' protagonist, Mark Grayson, also known as Invincible.

The decision to gender-swap Tech Jacket has reportedly opened up new narrative possibilities for the series. Voice actress Zoey Deutch has received high praise from Kirkman and co-showrunner Simon Racioppa for her energetic and humorous portrayal of Zoe. Deutch's performance has been described as professional and fun, significantly enhancing the character.

Tech Jacket's updated character, Zoe, was first seen in Invincible season 3, episode 7, and is set to play a crucial role in the ongoing war against the Viltrum Empire. After being recruited by Allen the Alien, she departs Earth to join the Coalition of Planets. This change comes after a previous episode's divisive comic deviation, with episode 5 receiving a 9.8/10 IMDb score, indicating strong audience reception for the Tech Jacket alteration.

With three episodes remaining in season 4, and season 5 already renewed and recorded, Zoe's storyline is expected to explore the "exciting things" teased by Kirkman. Her journey with the Coalition of Planets, alongside characters like Oliver, Mark, and Allen, suggests a growing importance in the fight against the Viltrum Empire.
