Dental Hygienist Fights Demons From Another Dimension

Insidious: Out Of The Further, the sixth installment in Sony's horror franchise, attempts to present itself as a novel entry, leveraging its producers' association with recent successful genre films. However, it largely sticks to familiar territory.

The film shifts focus from the Lambert family to new protagonist Gemma, a dental hygienist who discovers her ability to enter the "Further" and recall the deceased. An opening sequence in 1999 establishes Gemma's childhood connection to this alternate dimension.

As an adult, Gemma's life with her daughter and boyfriend is disrupted by unsettling visions and a harrowing experience at her dental practice. These events propel her into the "Further," navigating terrifying landscapes and encountering various spirits.

Guided by the spectral Elise Rainer and a medium named Clare, Gemma must thwart an evil spirit, Cyrus, who seeks to return to the living world with his deceased companions. The film employs a PG-13 rating, minimizing graphic content while still using dental imagery for unsettling effect.

Despite the introduction of new characters and demons like KeyFace and Doll Girl, the film struggles to differentiate itself from the "new wave" of innovative horror, ultimately feeling like a retread of the franchise's established playbook.
