Actor Slams Casting of Influencers for Follows
21 May
Summary
- Trained actors are being overlooked for roles.
- Popularity on social media dictates casting decisions.
- Audience viewing habits can drive industry change.

Actor Raashul Tandon has voiced concerns about the increasing tendency for film and streaming productions to cast social media influencers with little acting experience over seasoned professionals. This trend has drawn renewed attention following journalist Saurabh Dwivedi's acting debut in 'Kartavya.'
Tandon explained that major production houses and streaming platforms often select individuals based on their online following, hoping to leverage this for financial gain, rather than their demonstrable acting talent. He pointed to examples like Anubhav Singh Bassi and Ajey Nagar (Carryminati) being cast in films despite their primary expertise lying elsewhere.
He passionately appealed to producers and platforms to assign roles appropriately, acknowledging face value but advocating for trained actors who may not have a large online presence but possess the necessary skills. Tandon suggested that audiences can also influence this shift by curating their feeds and engaging with quality content, thereby encouraging the creation of original and well-performed projects.
Dwivedi's performance in 'Kartavya,' where he played a self-proclaimed godman opposite Saif Ali Khan, received significant audience criticism. The film, also featuring Rasika Dugal and Sanjay Mishra, is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
