Indie Spirit Awards Expand Horizons to Global Filmmakers
18 Aug
Summary
- New international and digital creator categories added for 2027.
- Berlinale festival screenings now qualify for award consideration.
- Unrestricted $25k grants accompany new Emerging Filmmaker prizes.
The Film Independent Spirit Awards are expanding their reach for the 2027 ceremony, scheduled for March 6. Two significant new categories have been introduced: the Digital Creator Award and Best International First Feature.
Crucially, the Berlinale film festival has been added as a qualifying event, meaning films that premiere there will now be eligible for Spirit Award consideration. This move broadens the awards' scope beyond its traditional North American festival partners.
This expansion reflects Film Independent's dedication to recognizing a wider array of independent storytelling. The Digital Creator Award will offer a $25,000 grant, mirroring existing Emerging Filmmaker awards, supporting bold original creators.
Submissions for film and digital creators have early deadlines starting September 1, 2026, with final deadlines by September 29, 2026. Television submission deadlines are also outlined, with regular deadlines in September 2026.
