7 Mar
Summary
- Independent film industry is adapting to changes and remains optimistic.
- Streamers' past practices created challenges, but a new phase is emerging.
- An elevated genre film budget sweet spot is around $1M.

UK financiers at Glasgow Film Festival's Industry Focus shared insights on the independent film sector. They acknowledged a "correctional period" but conveyed a positive outlook for the future, emphasizing the industry's inherent adaptability and flexibility.
Kirsty Bell, CEO of Goldfinch, described a significant "pivot" driven by streamers. She noted how streamers initially bought content but then used that knowledge to produce their own, creating a "hangover" for independent producers. The industry is now in a "morphing" phase, reinventing itself.
Joe Simpson of Ashland Hill Media Finance agreed, calling it a "funny period of post-streamer land grab." He predicts a return of micro-payment models and increased revenue for independent films as AI influences distribution and costs decrease. Simpson also highlighted virtual stages as a more cost-effective shooting method.
Regarding budgets, Bell suggested $1M is the sweet spot for elevated genre films, adjustable based on cast and presales. Jonathan Gorner of Media Finance Capital stressed the importance of sales agents in assessing market viability for budgets, advising producers to align costs with market realities. The Glasgow Film Festival ran from February 25 to March 8, 2026.
