The Waterfront Indie Film Festival (WIFF), scheduled to take place in the city from October 2-6, 2025, is set to unite diverse voices, celebrate creativity, and inspire independent storytelling. The festival held its curtain raiser event at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) on Thursday, where a panel discussion moderated by actress Richa Chadha featured filmmakers Shoojit Sircar, Rajat Kapoor, and Sridhar Rangayan.
The panelists shared insights on the evolving trends, innovations, and the future of independent cinema in India. Richa Chadha highlighted the recently-released Marathi film Sabar Bonda as an inspiring example of how strong storytelling can create an impact beyond commercial formulae. She emphasized that successful movements in Marathi and Malayalam indie cinema can serve as a guiding light for filmmakers across the country.
Shoojit Sircar acknowledged the challenges indie filmmakers face, from budgets to access and distribution, but expressed his unwavering enthusiasm for the medium. He cited the success of the Marathi film Sairaat as a testament to the potential of indie cinema to strike gold, despite the odds.
