Indie Films Bypass Distributors for Direct Screenings
19 Jun
Summary
- New initiative connects 10 independent film teams directly with programmers.
- Event occurs June 22 in Chicago, coinciding with IND/EX conference.
- Focus on building replicable direct filmmaker-to-exhibitor relationships.

The shrinking acquisition market is compelling independent filmmakers to explore creative distribution strategies. Art House Convergence (AHC) and Kinema are launching The Booking Fair, a beta initiative designed to directly connect 10 independent film teams with art house cinema programmers. This event eliminates the need for a distributor intermediary.
The Booking Fair will take place on June 22 in Chicago, aligning with the IND/EX conference. The selected 10 films, comprising five documentaries and five narratives, are targeting theatrical releases between September and December 2026. Filmmakers have participated in educational sessions covering pitching, theatrical positioning, and case studies, retaining their theatrical rights.
AHC and Kinema's project is a response to the declining traditional distribution pipeline. Their research indicates that art house programmers desire more direct access to independently controlled film titles. Kinema provides the platform infrastructure and audience reach, while AHC offers its exhibitor network and programming credibility.
This partnership is currently framed as an experiment, with findings to be compiled into a Theatrical Distribution Playbook. The ultimate goal is to establish a replicable process for direct filmmaker-to-exhibitor connections, addressing a current gap in the industry.
