Summary
- Animated film about a calf was made by a mother-son duo over five years.
- Movie gained traction online after a surprisingly low initial box office.
- Its earnings dramatically increased, becoming a daily chart success.

The animated film "Niulai" (《牛来》, or Here Comes the Cow) embarked on an extraordinary journey from near obscurity to box office success. Initially released on August 5, the 86-minute movie, which follows a young calf's growth and acceptance of responsibility, garnered only RMB7,711 from 278 viewers in its first ten days.
This low performance was juxtaposed with the dedication of its creators, director Xin Yumeng and his mother Sun Lifang, who reportedly spent five years on the project. The film's fortunes shifted dramatically on August 14 when its meager box office numbers began circulating on Chinese social media. This sparked curiosity, leading to screenings being packed.
"Niulai" soon climbed the daily box office charts, reaching fourth place as of August 17, with cumulative earnings of RMB9.51 million. Projections estimated a total lifetime gross of around RMB18.4 million. The film's unexpected success was fueled by online memes, a connection to the concept of a 'bull market' in finance, and growing support for the mother-son filmmaking team.
