Wild Duck Productions, a Spanish genre distributor, has secured the rights to Bhargav Saikia's folk horror film "Bokshi" for a theatrical release this Halloween. This acquisition follows the film's successful festival circuit, beginning with its premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The deal was finalized between Wild Duck and Alief, representing the filmmakers.
"Bokshi," meaning "witch" in Nepali, has undergone significant evolution since its initial premiere. The recut version, emphasizing eroticism and dread akin to Robert Eggers' style, was showcased at various festivals, including Neuchâtel Fantastic Film Festival and SXSW Sydney. The narrative centers on Anahita, a teen who joins a trek to an ancient site with her teacher, uncovering a cult worshipping a demoness.
Filmed over 80 days in remote Himalayan regions across Sikkim, West Bengal, and Assam, the independent production utilizes multiple languages, including a unique fictional language. Director Bhargav Saikia described "Bokshi" as a cautionary tale about women's empowerment and environmental connection, aiming to reframe the 'witch' as a symbol of female strength. The film stars Mansi Multani and Prasanna Bisht.
