Dance Meets Football: India's Unique Fusion
8 Mar
Summary
- Indian classical dance merges with Brazilian football's rhythm.
- Researchers found similarities between dance movements and soccer techniques.
- The show combines Bharatanatyam, Chhau, and Kathak dance forms.

A novel performance art project in India is uniting the grace of classical Indian dance with the dynamic energy of Brazilian football. Initiated by Amar K Shridharani, who observed parallels between the two disciplines during his time in Brazil, the concept aimed to blend 'jogo bonito' with Indian dance traditions.
Acharya Jayalakshmi Eshwar, a renowned Bharatanatyam teacher, embraced the challenge despite initial unfamiliarity with football. Her research revealed significant connections between the Natyashastra's charis (feet movements) and football techniques, leading to the integration of Bharatanatyam, Saraikela Chhau, and Kathak. Adjustments were made to emphasize athletic movements over facial expressions and hand gestures to align with the football theme.
The performance, which includes sequences inspired by penalty kicks, premiered after the 2022 World Cup. Another enactment is scheduled for Monday as part of Triveni Kala Sangam's 75th-year celebrations. Dancers like Subasree Arvind and Nandita Nambiar found the fusion fascinating and creatively liberating, transforming their understanding of both dance and sport.
