A four-city concert tour, Sacred Pathways: Where Ragas Meet Songlines, is currently underway, highlighting the profound musical and cultural links between Australia and India. This unique collaboration features acclaimed Indian sitar maestro Pandit Shubhendra Rao and internationally recognized First Nations Australian composer and didgeridoo virtuoso William Barton.
Following initial performances in New Delhi and Bengaluru, the duo is set to perform in Chennai on Sunday, October 18th. Accompanied by tabla player and percussionist Nishit Gangani, the hour-long concert at Rukmini Arangam, Kalakshetra, promises an exploration of shared cultural heritage. Shubhendra notes that the high commissioner to India suggested these instruments to represent their respective cultures, a sentiment both musicians share.
William Barton explains that the sitar and didgeridoo, despite their differences, share a vibrational harmony. He views his sonic palette as a means to converse with other cultural art forms, expressing excitement for this inaugural collaboration. Shubhendra describes their approach as an exploration rather than a fixed performance, allowing them to journey through the music together.
Both artists aim to honor the traditions passed down through generations. They express a desire to acknowledge their ancestors for imparting this knowledge and hope to inspire positivity and enlightenment in their audience. Barton will also feature the guitar in his performance, adding another layer to this cross-cultural musical dialogue.
