Music maestro Ilaiyaraaja recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of his inaugural film, 'Annakili.' He emotionally recounted how writer-producer Panchu Arunachalam launched his cinematic career.
Ilaiyaraaja admitted to initial uncertainties about film music composition, presenting tunes by tapping on a table when asked by Arunachalam. These melodies reportedly inspired the film's screenplay, marking the beginning of his significant musical legacy.
He also addressed his public perception, stating, "People see me as a music god; let them see me that way." Despite over five decades in the industry, he feels unchanged, living solely through his music and creating it with honesty and a focus on peace.
Recalling his early career, Ilaiyaraaja mentioned working as an assistant composer in Kannada cinema for over 200 films. Despite this background, he felt profound nervousness during his independent debut for 'Annakili.'
Although 'Annakili' initially faced a lukewarm reception with one song even removed, its music eventually became a massive hit, revolutionizing Tamil cinema's soundscape. Ilaiyaraaja expressed confidence in his music's lasting power, asserting, "Even if I am not here tomorrow, my music will continue forever."
He believes the enduring emotional connection listeners share with his songs stems from their sincere creation. Ilaiyaraaja also revealed he is currently composing for an upcoming Tamil film directed by R. Balki.
