Sunny Deol & Akshaye Khanna: Legal Thriller 'Ikka' Review

The film 'Ikka' centers on a complex legal battle involving Shouryamann Gaur, accused of attempting to murder Soma Mittal. His politician father enlists the principled lawyer Arjun Mehra to defend him, despite a past conflict between the two. Arjun is unexpectedly compelled to take the case, facing significant evidence and public opinion against his client.

Written by Althea Kaushal with additional screenplay by Mayank Tewari, 'Ikka' presents a story with dramatic potential, though the writing proves inconsistent. Director Siddharth P Malhotra attempts to balance mass appeal with realism, avoiding over-the-top action. The film starts promisingly, with unusual circumstances leading Arjun to the case and engaging courtroom scenes.

However, the narrative falters with juvenile legal proceedings and a curious omission of CCTV evidence. A key piece of evidence, Shouryamann's DNA found under Soma's fingernails, is inexplicably not used in court. While the connection between Shouryamann and Arjun is intriguing, it evokes a sense of déjà vu.

Performances are a strong point, with Sunny Deol delivering a restrained yet powerful portrayal, and Akshaye Khanna offering another compelling performance, especially in his scenes with Deol. Tillotama Shome, despite script limitations, provides a terrific performance. Technical aspects like Jishnu Bhattacharjee's cinematography and Julius Packiam's background score enhance the film's big-screen appeal.

Ultimately, 'Ikka' relies heavily on the star power of Deol and Khanna and features several powerful moments. Nevertheless, its potential is undermined by a weak script. The film is expected to attract viewership due to its casting and the inherent appeal of courtroom dramas.
