Idris Elba Eyes Director's Chair, Shifts Focus from Acting

Idris Elba has expressed a strong inclination to shift his career focus from acting to full-time directing. The 53-year-old actor shared his aspirations at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia, where he presented his latest directorial effort, the short film 'Dust To Dreams.' This marks his return to directing since his 2018 feature, 'Yardie,' and he hopes to continue this path.

Elba, with over 130 acting credits, stated he still enjoys acting but finds directing allows for different creative expression and engagement with the filmmaking process. He also discussed his upcoming directorial project for Apple, an adaptation of Neil LaBute's play, which he has transposed to explore themes of marriage, trust, and race. Filmed in Ghana, the production recently concluded.

During the festival, Elba also clarified persistent rumors, confirming he will not be the next James Bond. However, he is set to reprise his role as Detective John Luther in a new film, with production beginning in February. Despite his desire to move more into directing, Elba has previously emphasized the privilege and enjoyment he finds in acting opportunities.
