Idris Elba Pivots to Directing, Eyes African Cinema

Idris Elba revealed his ambition to shift his focus entirely towards directing during a recent Q&A at the Red Sea Film Festival. While he continues to act, Elba finds directing allows him to engage with filmmaking in a more varied capacity. His recent directorial effort, the short film 'Dust To Dreams,' was filmed in Lagos, Nigeria, showcasing his commitment to projects within the continent.

Further demonstrating his directorial aspirations, Elba is working on 'This Is How It Goes,' an adaptation of Neil LaBute's play for Apple. He previously starred in a West End production of the play and now directs and acts in this feature version. The film reimagines the original narrative to explore themes of marriage, trust, and racial dynamics, with production recently concluding after a shoot starting in Ghana.

Elba also reflected on early career challenges, including a pact to avoid stereotypical roles, and shared an anecdote about auditioning for Steven Spielberg's 'Amistad.' He discussed his decision to pursue DJing over potentially exploitative roles, a path that eventually led him to his breakout role in 'The Wire,' ironically playing a gangster.
