- Film's 50th anniversary celebrated with international screenings
In a highly anticipated move, the iconic Indian film 'Sholay' is set to return to cinemas in a fully restored 4K version titled 'Sholay - The Final Cut'. The re-release is scheduled for December 12, 2025, marking the 50th anniversary of the film's debut.
The restoration project, undertaken by the Film Heritage Foundation, will allow audiences to experience the film's uncut version for the first time. Prior to its initial release in 1975, the film's ending had been altered due to censorship imposed during India's Emergency period. The previously censored scene, featuring Thakur's act of vengeance against Gabbar Singh, will now be reinstated, allowing viewers to witness the intended emotional intensity and dramatic payoff.
The 'Sholay' re-release is a central feature of the film's 50th anniversary celebrations. Earlier this year, the movie was showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it received international acclaim. The original cast, including Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar, and Amjad Khan, remain celebrated for their iconic performances.
Since its debut in 1975, 'Sholay' has left an indelible mark on Indian popular culture, becoming one of the most-viewed Indian films of all time. The upcoming 4K restoration and uncut release promise to reintroduce this cinematic masterpiece to a new generation of audiences.
