Bengaluru's Bengali community recently gathered for ICON Utsav 2026, a vibrant Durga Puja celebration at Lodha ICON in Thanisandra. This fourth annual event went beyond standard Puja rituals, offering a comprehensive cultural immersion. Attendees experienced traditional worship in the sabeki style, alongside the symbolic presence of the hathpakha, a traditional hand fan.
The festival highlighted dynamic Bengali folk arts, including the UNESCO-recognized Chhau dance, known for its powerful movements and mythological storytelling. The energetic Raibenshe dance and the soulful Baul music, exploring spiritual themes, also enriched the celebration. These performances aimed to bring Bengali culture to life for both diaspora members and newcomers.
Priyam Mandal, president of ICON Utsav Durga Puja, emphasized the goal of experiencing Bengal through its diverse artistic expressions. A significant aspect of the event was fostering intergenerational connection, encouraging children to actively engage with their heritage. Mandal stated that direct experience transforms culture from mere knowledge to a carried forward legacy. The event also featured community food gatherings like Anandomela and the traditional Dhunuchi Naach.
