Ian Wright Biopic: Stormzy Producing Life Story

A new biopic chronicling the life of former England footballer Ian Wright is currently in development. Rapper Stormzy is attached to produce the film through his Merky Films company. The movie aims to capture Wright's inspiring journey from his roots in Brockley, South London, to becoming a celebrated striker for Arsenal and Crystal Palace.

Director Tom Wilton, who grew up on the same housing estate as Wright, is writing and directing the feature. The filmmakers have emphasized that Wright's story is one of "heartache, determination and unbelievable triumph," highlighting its relevance to contemporary British society. Wright himself has shared that while the narrative includes "hard-hitting moments," his ultimate desire is for the film to "give people hope and joy."

Wright's career began later than most, with his debut for Crystal Palace in 1985 at age 22. He later moved to Arsenal, where he became the club's highest scorer before being surpassed by Thierry Henry. After retiring from playing in 2000, Wright successfully transitioned into broadcasting and punditry, underscoring a career that extended far beyond the football pitch. Stormzy noted Wright's journey exemplifies "resilience, family and believing in yourself against the odds."
