Zada Prepares for Hunger Games Frenzy: Researching Past Stars

Joseph Zada, a 21-year-old Australian actor, is preparing to step into the spotlight as Haymitch Abernathy in "Sunrise on the Reaping." The prequel film, slated for release on November 20, 2026, delves into Haymitch's younger years and his participation in the 50th Hunger Games. Zada is actively researching how to handle his impending fame, studying magazine covers and interviews of established stars like Jennifer Lawrence and Timothée Chalamet.

The trailer for "Sunrise on the Reaping" is currently being shown in theaters before major summer blockbusters, signaling the start of the film's promotional campaign. Zada is also set to appear in Netflix's "East of Eden" in October 2026, shortly before his major studio film debut.

Director Francis Lawrence and producer Nina Jacobson worked closely to adapt Suzanne Collins' novel. The casting process for Zada was extensive, with the filmmakers seeking an actor capable of portraying Haymitch's transformation from an optimistic youth to the cynical mentor known from later films.

The 50th Hunger Games, a Quarter Quell, required double the tributes from each district, making it a particularly brutal event. The film explores Haymitch's relationships, including his bond with his girlfriend Lenore and his complex dynamic with fellow tribute Maysilee Donner, played by Mckenna Grace.

Notable cast members also include Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee and Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle. The production faced significant logistical challenges, filming in remote locations in Spain.
