The dramatic saga of a humpback whale, known by names such as Timmy and Hope, which repeatedly stranded off Germany's Baltic coast earlier this year, is now being brought to the stage. German director Alexander Klessinger announced that Hamburg's Ernst Deutsch Theatre will present a multidisciplinary production titled "Hope Dies Last" on July 11.
This unique theatrical evening promises a blend of performance, concert, and public discourse, incorporating original quotes from various figures involved in the whale's story. The whale's weeks-long rescue attempt drew significant international attention and sparked widespread public engagement, including debates and demonstrations, raising questions about the profound response.
A private initiative, backed by financiers Walter Gunz and Karin Walter-Mommert, undertook a complex operation to transport the 12-ton mammal into the North Sea. Despite these efforts, the whale's survival was short-lived, and it was later found deceased off the Danish island of Anholt on May 14.
The theatre production will feature a musical performance by the Berlin band Tulpe, known for their song "Blow Up the Whale." Additionally, a post-performance talk with small animal veterinarian Kirsten Toennies, who was part of the rescue team, is scheduled, offering insights into the challenging rescue operation.
