Summary
- A gaseous killer terrorizes Tokyo in a lavish Netflix series.
- The series reimagines a 1960 cult classic by Godzilla's creators.
- Advanced VFX bring the intangible 'Human Vapor' to life.

Netflix and Toho have launched Human Vapor, an eight-part series centered on a unique Tokyo killer who manifests as a gaseous, shape-shifting entity. Director Shinzo Katayama faced the challenge of visualizing an invisible antagonist, drawing inspiration from the 1960 cult classic of the same name.
The new series boasts impressive collaborations, with screenplay by Yeon Sang-ho and Ryu Yong-jae, and visual effects by Shirogumi, the studio behind the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One. It aims to be a tentpole production, pooling top talent from Japan and Korea for a globally resonant narrative.
Human Vapor's plot follows reporter Kyoko and detective Kenji Okamoto as they investigate a series of gruesome murders linked to the mysterious White Center. The narrative intertwines a monster mystery with a social thriller, exploring contemporary Japanese societal dynamics and the relationship between the powerful and the powerless.
This reimagining pays homage to the original, retaining character names while modernizing the concept for a 2026 audience. The series leverages advanced CG VFX, with Shirogumi dedicating 30 months and 48,000 working hours to bring the ethereal Human Vapor to life convincingly.
