Hulu is developing a drama series based on Sheila Masterson's self-published novel, 'The Poison Daughter'. The dark romantasy story, about a woman whose kiss is deadly, has garnered significant attention.
'The Poison Daughter' went viral after its October 2025 release, selling over 250,000 copies and appearing on the USA Today Bestseller list three times. The novel was later acquired by Slowburn and is set to publish in hardcover and audiobook formats in the U.S. and UK on August 18, 2026.
The adaptation is poised to capitalize on the increasing popularity of the romantasy genre. This follows Hulu's previous attempt to adapt Sarah J. Maas' 'A Court of Thorns and Roses' and Prime Video's greenlighting of a series based on Rebecca Yarros' 'Fourth Wing'.
Masterson will executive produce the series, which is currently seeking a writer. This move brings 'The Poison Daughter' into a growing trend of self-published books being adapted into successful screen projects, following in the footsteps of titles like 'The Martian' and 'Fifty Shades of Grey'.
