"House of the Dragon" returns with its third season on Sunday, June 21, reigniting the intense Targaryen civil war. The prequel to "Game of Thrones" picks up as open warfare explodes between Rhaenyra Targaryen and her half-brother Aegon II Targaryen, supported by their respective factions and dragons.
Season 1 established the succession dispute after King Viserys I Targaryen named his daughter Rhaenyra heir, despite her having illegitimate sons and marrying her uncle Daemon. Viserys's second wife, Alicent Hightower, also had sons, creating the "Greens" (supporting Aegon) and "Blacks" (supporting Rhaenyra) factions.
The conflict escalated tragically when Aemond killed Rhaenyra's son Luke, and a botched assassination attempt by Daemon led to the death of Aegon's son, turning public opinion against Rhaenyra. The Battle of Rook's Rest saw Rhaenys killed, and Aegon was left incapacitated, with Aemond assuming control.
As the season ended, Westeros teetered on the brink of full-scale war. Both sides amassed armies and fleets, with Rhaenyra holding a slight dragon advantage. Alicent proposed a peace to Rhaenyra, but Season 3 promises the true outbreak of war.
