Two years ago, George R.R. Martin voiced concerns over "House of the Dragon," a sentiment that has amplified as the series diverges from its source novel, "Fire & Blood." Showrunner Ryan Condal's significant plot alterations, including the controversial omission of the character Maelor and substantial changes to Alicent and Aemond's storylines, have drawn Martin's ire.

Season 1 saw notable, often beneficial, changes like adding depth to King Viserys and creating a more complex relationship between young Alicent and Rhaenyra. However, recent seasons have dramatically shifted narratives, such as Alicent's unexpected mission and Aemond's altered role at Harrenhal.

The show also introduces new elements like Alys Rivers's dragon eggs and reassigns character roles, such as Rhaena's pivotal involvement with Sheepstealer. These deviations, while sometimes improving the narrative, move the series further from its literary origins.

Further changes include Ormund Hightower's characterization and Corlys Velaryon's unexpected kidnapping. The show also streamlines timelines, notably reducing the ages of Rhaenyra's younger children, which impacts their involvement in key events like the Battle of the Gullet.

While the broad strokes of Rhaenyra's struggle for control remain, the characterizations of Rhaenyra and Alicent, in particular, are fundamentally different from their book counterparts. These extensive changes prompt reflection on whether "House of the Dragon" is an adaptation or an entirely new story.
