Israeli hostages David and Ariel Cunio, who were released last October after two years in captivity, are traveling to Berlin for a screening of Tom Shoval's updated film, "A Letter To David - The Complete Version." This documentary, initially conceived as a personal message to his friend David Cunio, was first shown at the Berlinale last year. At that time, both David and Ariel remained hostages in Gaza, and the film lacked a definitive conclusion.
The film's director, Tom Shoval, a friend of the Cunio twins since they appeared in his 2013 film "Youth," revisited raw footage and audition tapes. He wove these elements into a documentary that reflects on the devastating reality of Kibbutz Nir Oz, where many residents were killed or abducted on October 7, 2023. The documentary also delves into the separation of the Cunio brothers and the connection between life and cinema.
Shoval had publicly stated the film would not be complete until David returned home, vowing to recut the ending. Now, a year after the initial screening, he will accompany David and Ariel, along with their families, to Berlin for the new version's presentation. This screening, organized by the Future Narrative Fund and Babylon cinema in cooperation with the Berlinale, is a deeply emotional moment, marking the hopeful conclusion the filmmakers and the Cunio family had long awaited.
Nancy Spielberg, producer for U.S. company Playmount Productions, emphasized Shoval's unwavering belief in David's return. She noted that the film's completion after 738 days of captivity represents a small step toward David's healing, offering immense gratitude and the knowledge of his family's tireless efforts for his release.
