A new contemporary art space named Gold is opening this month in Hong Kong, aiming to revive the concept of the art salon. The 3,200-square-foot venue is inspired by the rich traditions of French art salons and, notably, Gertrude Stein's famed early 20th-century Paris salon.
Gold's curatorial director, Tobias Berger, explained that the name 'salon' evokes a history of vibrant idea exchange and boundary-pushing. Similar to Stein's salon, which welcomed luminaries like Picasso and Hemingway, Gold intends to bring diverse individuals together.
The space will serve as a multifaceted hub, showcasing exhibitions of art, design, and fashion by local, mainland Chinese, and international artists. Beyond visual arts, it will also host music and performance events, public discussions on the arts, and act as a platform for the broader community.
