The dark comedy 'Honeyjoon' centers on Lela and June, a mother and daughter whose trip to the Azores becomes a poignant exploration of grief and reconciliation. As they mark the first anniversary of a profound loss, their differing approaches to mourning create tension, further complicated by June's personal choices.
A local surfer and tour guide, João, offers wisdom, advising them to face life's challenges with resilience. His philosophical guidance helps Lela and June navigate their emotional turmoil and reconnect with each other.
Directed by Lilian T. Mehrel, 'Honeyjoon' is a U.S.-Portugal co-production that premiered at the 2025 Tribeca Festival. It secured a $1 million prize from the AT&T Untold Stories pitch competition, awarded in 2024. The film opens in New York on June 10, followed by runs in Los Angeles starting June 12 and a Chicago screening on June 26.
