HollyShorts Dubai, recently concluding its inaugural event that served as a direct pipeline for Arab filmmakers to gain Academy Awards consideration, is introducing a significant new strand. A dedicated short films competition for college students throughout the Middle East and beyond has been announced, aiming to nurture emerging talent.
The festival's first edition, held from December 12-14, 2024, at Firdaus Studio in Expo City, Dubai, was met with enthusiasm from the local film community. Keynote speaker Hayder Rothschild Hoozeer, producer of the Ukraine war-based student short 'Rock, Paper, Scissors,' highlighted the event's focus on educational initiatives and networking.
Jeff Pryor, HollyShorts Dubai strategic advisor, emphasized the extraordinary talent within regional universities, noting the lack of direct industry recognition pathways. This new competition seeks to lower entry barriers, offering students chances for professional feedback and industry connections. The second edition of HollyShorts Dubai is slated for January 14-17, 2027.
