A significant open heritage science project has commenced at Nostell, West Yorkshire, offering the public a rare glimpse into research on a Holbein masterpiece copy. This initiative, a UK first, employs cutting-edge techniques utilized during the restoration of Rembrandt's 'The Night Watch' at the Rijksmuseum.
The painting, a faithful and same-size replica of a lost Holbein original, depicts Thomas More and his family. It is considered a prized possession of the National Trust, measuring 2.5 by 3.4 meters. The research, conducted by the Fitzwilliam Museum's Hamilton Kerr Institute, aims to discover hidden under-drawings and later additions.
This project is funded in part by Dallas University's Center for Thomas More Studies. Researchers hope to resolve lingering questions about the painting, including its creator, potentially mirroring the public fascination generated by the 'Night Watch' conservation.
