After more than a decade of silence, a 500-year-old church bell in Seaton, Northumberland, is poised to ring again. The bell at the Church of Our Lady had been out of use since 2010, with concerns that its sound could exacerbate existing cracks in the tower. Significant repairs have now been completed, funded by a £245,000 grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The restoration, named the 'Ringing Through Time' project, aims to revive the bell's 'magical' sound, described as the voice of the church proclaiming life's major events. The project extends beyond the bell itself, encompassing enhancements to the churchyard to improve its suitability for wildlife. Volunteers will also be trained to research the churchyard's history and record local memories.
Work is progressing rapidly, with scaffolding erected to facilitate the repairs. The church aims to reopen in time for several weddings scheduled for August 2026. Parishioners are eager for the bell to ring out again for these celebrations, marking a return to a cherished tradition.
