A descendant has resurrected a commercially successful India Pale Ale (IPA) recipe first brewed in 1822 by Samuel Allsopp. This historic ale was originally crafted to withstand a six-month sea journey to India, a challenge that helped establish Burton-upon-Trent as a brewing hub.
Steve Holton, owner of Kirkstall Brewery, discovered the original recipe in a leather-bound ledger. He partnered with Jamie Allsopp, a seventh-generation descendant, to recreate the beer. This revival marks a significant moment, with Jamie Allsopp stating it initiated the craft beer revolution.
The Allsopp's India Pale Ale has now been released in 70 pubs across the country. The original IPA's success stemmed from increased alcohol and hop content, acting as natural preservatives. This revival aims to reintroduce people to cask ales and their rich history.
