Summary
- A 17th-century barn is being converted into a modern theatre space.
- Performers will gain long-term contracts and housing for career development.
- Nearly £1 million has been raised for the £1.2 million project.

St Germain's Barn, a Grade II listed building dating back to 1649 in St Albans, Hertfordshire, is slated for a significant transformation into a cultural venue. Theatre company OVO received permission to convert the derelict barn, aiming to establish a repertory company that nurtures young and emerging talent. Supported by prominent actors like Ralph Fiennes and Dame Joanna Lumley, the project plans to offer a unique season of performances in the space before extensive renovations commence.
The venue's artistic director, Adam Nichols, anticipates opening in October and programming through the winter. He envisions audiences experiencing the barn's authentic charm before its refurbishment, which is hoped to be completed by late 2027. The converted space will include essential amenities such as a cafe, bar, and accommodation for actors.
OVO aims to replicate a successful repertory theatre model, offering year-round programs and long-term employment contracts. This initiative seeks to address the instability in the current theatre industry, which often hinders career progression for those from less privileged backgrounds. By providing stable contracts, housing, and performance opportunities alongside experienced actors, the project intends to foster a more diverse and sustainable creative environment.
Nearly £1 million of the required £1.2 million has already been raised through local investment and funds from the government's Community Ownership Fund and the Architectural Heritage Fund. The renovation plans emphasize simplicity, focusing on retaining the barn's historical features and exposed wood to create a comfortable and beautiful space that prioritizes creative substance over elaborate embellishments.
