A preservation charity, Dacorum Heritage Trust, has put forward a proposal to redevelop The Bury, an empty Grade II* listed building in Hemel Hempstead, into a heritage centre. This 1790 structure, which originally served as a private residence, is intended to become a welcoming hub for the entire borough.
The proposed centre would accommodate the trust's collection of over 132,000 catalogued items, featuring archives, photographs, and various objects. Currently, the trust operates from a restricted space at the Museum Store in Berkhamsted, holding only a few open days annually.
Dacorum Borough Council, the building's owner, confirmed it is evaluating multiple options, including the Dacorum Heritage Trust's proposal. The council stated that decisions are pending, and all submissions will be assessed thoroughly to ensure a viable future for this important heritage asset.
The trust emphasized The Bury's exceptional local significance and its potential to become a dynamic space for community engagement, exhibitions, and events. Relocating would significantly improve storage, security, and environmental conditions for the collection.
