Filmed in May under intense heat, Malini had to perform barefoot on scorching sand, mud, and sharp rocks, causing considerable pain.
Her mother's concern led to a suggestion of wearing a thin sole, but director Ramesh Sippy noticed and insisted it be removed to preserve on-screen authenticity. Malini's attempts to postpone the shoot to a cooler month were also unsuccessful, as Sippy was particular about filming in May.
To manage the aftermath of each day's shoot, Malini would immerse her feet in cold water and apply cold towels to alleviate the pain. She credits her rigorous Bharatanatyam training with providing the resilience needed to endure these arduous conditions during the filming of the 1975 landmark movie.
