The charity organization War Child UK has released Help (2), a new compilation album aiming to emulate the success of its 1995 predecessor. The original Help album raised over $1.5 million for children in war-stricken areas like Bosnia. This follow-up, released more than 30 years later, addresses the urgent need to support children affected by current conflicts in places such as Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, and Syria.
The album boasts a star-studded tracklist, drawing in listeners with contributions from major artists. Olivia Rodrigo offers a surprising cover of a Magnetic Fields song, while Cameron Winter presents his first original track since his band Geese gained popularity. Arctic Monkeys also contribute their first new song since 2022, "Opening Night."
Help (2) successfully bridges generational divides and musical styles. It showcases established bands and provides platforms for artists to honor their heroes through covers. Notable original songs come from Black Country, New Road, Arlo Parks, Big Thief, and Sampha. The Scottish collective Young Fathers deliver a particularly impactful track, "Don't Fight the Young."
Striking covers also feature prominently, with a focus on Nineties artists. Olivia Rodrigo's contribution highlights her appreciation for The Magnetic Fields, while Beabadoobee delivers a reverent version of Elliott Smith's "Say Yes." Fontaines D.C. offer a relevant cover of Sinead O'Connor's "Black Boys on Mopeds," echoing the original compilation's spirit. Arooj Aftab and Beck collaborate on a timely rendition of Jeff Buckley's "Lilac Wine."
