Jan Komasa's film "Heel," formerly titled "Good Boy," centers on a 19-year-old degenerate raver from London. During an extreme bender, he is kidnapped by Stephen Graham and held captive in the basement of a lavish estate. The narrative, which has drawn comparisons to Greek New Wave cinema, unfolds over 110 minutes. The film delves into the young man's journey toward redemption, echoing themes from Komasa's previous work.
The reasoning behind the protagonist Tommy's captivity is gradually revealed through narrative breadcrumbs. He awakens in a basement where unsettling nature sounds amplify his distress. The film's most surprising element is the complex emotional entanglement that develops between Tommy and his captors, Chris and Kathryn.
Tommy, a party animal prone to oversharing and substance abuse, finds himself at the mercy of Chris and Kathryn. His defiance is met with physical punishment and verbal reprimands. They also have a young son, Jonathan, who provides Tommy with a rare moment of humanity amidst his ordeal.
As Tommy shows signs of compliance, he is granted more freedom within the estate, though still bound by a dog collar and chains. The captors' actions, including a staged birthday picnic, blur the lines between care and control. It becomes apparent that Tommy is not their first victim, and a history of family trauma seems to be the underlying cause.
Faced with this realization and the possibility of domesticating his trauma, Tommy begins to plot an escape. The film questions what Tommy is returning to, offering a moralistic perspective on solving debauchery through domestication. Despite its sometimes predictable plot, "Heel" is anchored by strong performances, particularly Anson Boon's portrayal of Tommy's transformation. The film masterfully extracts empathy from a story about a deeply dysfunctional family.
"Heel" premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. Magnolia Pictures is set to release it in select theaters on Friday, March 6, 2026.
