Broadway Musical Parody: 'Heated Rivalry' Hits Stage

The musical parody 'Heated Rivalry,' inspired by a hit Canadian television series, is making its Off-Broadway debut on May 12. Following successful sold-out concert presentations earlier in the year, the show will have an eight-week staged run featuring choreography. The musical, penned by Dylan MarcAurele, translates key moments from the series into songs like "Big Ass, Cold Heart" and introduces a new character, Susan, a "lovable wine mom" who also serves as the narrator.

MarcAurele, known for musical parodies of films and television shows, developed 'Heated Rivalry' after watching only a portion of the original series. He aimed to capture the humor and emotional resonance he found, with the character of Susan added to reflect the show's growing female fanbase and provide a narrative voice. The intense production schedule saw the creators having only three weeks to write the musical before its initial March presentations, with cast rehearsals limited to just a few days.

Jay Armstrong Johnson reprises his role as Ilya Rozanov, a character friends noted he resembles. Johnson faced the challenge of mastering a Russian accent for the part, which he worked on with a dialect coach. The upcoming Off-Broadway run will feature Johnson, alongside returning cast members Ryann Redmond, Cherry Torres, and Ryan Duncan, as well as new addition Jimin Moon. It remains uncertain if the creators of the original television series are aware of the musical parody.
