Heated Rivalry Shut Out of Emmys: Canadian Production Rules

The highly popular television series 'Heated Rivalry,' a significant hit from the past year, will not be recognized with any Primetime Emmy nominations. This ineligibility stems from Emmy rules that prohibit shows financed by production companies outside the U.S. from competing in this awards category. As 'Heated Rivalry' is a production of Canadian media company Bell Media and airs on its streaming service Crave, it falls into this restricted group.

Despite this exclusion from the Emmys, the series has already garnered substantial accolades in its home country. It secured an impressive 16 awards at the 2026 Canadian Screen Awards, including distinctions for best drama series, lead performer, direction, and writing. Actor Connor Storrie, an American citizen, was not eligible for these Canadian awards, but his performance in 'Heated Rivalry' may still be recognized in a different capacity.

Fans may see Storrie's name appear in Wednesday morning's nomination announcements for his guest actor role in a comedy series on Saturday Night Live. 'Heated Rivalry' itself, which is available in the U.S. on HBO Max, centers on a fictional professional hockey universe inspired by popular romance novels. The show's first season is based on the second book in the series.

The series follows the complex relationship between two rival professional players: Canada-born Shane Hollander and Russia-born Ilya Rozanov. Both actors have achieved certified stardom through their roles. Crave has renewed 'Heated Rivalry' for a second season, which is set to begin filming this summer and is targeting a spring 2027 release. This upcoming season will draw from subsequent novels in the book series, with an additional book in the series also slated for June 2027.
