HBO is developing a new true crime drama series titled "Dorothea," centered on the life and crimes of Dorothea Puente, a serial killer active in the 1980s.
Geena Davis has been cast in the challenging title role and will also serve as an executive producer for the project. Joshua Michael Stern is attached as the showrunner. Michael Rosenbaum and Jeff Frost are also executive producing, with Rosenbaum having initiated the pitch to Bristol Circle Entertainment.
Known as the "Killer Landlady," Puente operated a boarding house in Sacramento between 1982 and 1988. Her facade of helping the less fortunate concealed a dark reality. She was eventually charged with the murders of nine individuals, many of whom were her tenants.
Puente's victims were often poisoned, with their bodies buried on the property. She then proceeded to cash their social security checks. Despite the charges, a hung jury led to a conviction on only three counts. In 1993, she received a life sentence and passed away in 2011 at the age of 82.
