25 Years of Hansal Mehta's "Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar": Untold Secrets and Incredible Trivia Revealed

In October 2025, Hansal Mehta's first theatrical release, "Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar," celebrated its 25th anniversary. The 2000 film, which starred Manoj Bajpayee, Tabu, Aditya Srivastava, and Saurabh Shukla, was widely acclaimed for its treatment, subject, performances, and music.

Mehta has now revealed several intriguing behind-the-scenes stories about the making of the film. He shared that he initially narrated the idea to his close friends, Manoj Bajpayee and Anurag Kashyap, while they were working on the 1998 film "Satya." The trio even signed a "handsome" contract for Re 1 each to make the film.

Despite the shoestring budget of just Rs. 20 lakhs, Mehta managed to bring the project to life. He credits his assistant director, Kanika Verma, whose father's money from Muscat helped shoot the first schedule. Even after Aditya Srivastava lost the lead role to Bajpayee, he remained passionate about the project and contributed financially.

Mehta also expressed his gratitude to writer Saurabh Shukla, who wrote the film for free and even played a pivotal role. Sadly, the film's negatives have been destroyed, and there is no record of it, making it a lost treasure in Hansal Mehta's filmography.
