Director Hamaguchi Ryusuke's latest film, "All of a Sudden," made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, earning an impressive seven-minute standing ovation. This French-language drama, his first set primarily outside Japan, explores themes of terminal illness and profound human connection.
The film centers on a Parisian nursing home director and a terminally ill Japanese theater director, whose lives intertwine and transform their understanding of care. Inspired by actual correspondence, Hamaguchi spent two years developing the project, working with French actors in both Paris and Tokyo.
This premiere marks Hamaguchi's third Cannes appearance. His previous film, "Drive My Car," garnered significant awards, including an Academy Award for Best International Feature. "All of a Sudden" is distributed by Neon in North America and opens in Japan on June 19 and France on August 12.
