Halifax Arts Centre Closes, Faces Sale
28 Aug
Summary
- Square Chapel Arts Centre in Halifax closed suddenly last year.
- A winding-up order forced the centre's owner into liquidation.
- Arts Council England is marketing the building for cultural use.
The Square Chapel Arts Centre, a prominent venue in Halifax town centre, has been placed on the market following its sudden closure last year. The centre ceased all operations in February of the previous year, prompting significant public outcry and campaigns for its revival.
In the spring of this year, His Majesty's Revenue and Customs initiated a winding-up order against the Community Interest Company that owned the arts centre. This action led to the company's closure and subsequent voluntary liquidation.
Arts Council England, acting as the marketing agent for the building, stated its commitment to restoring the venue for cultural use within Halifax. As a creditor with a legal interest due to a prior capital award, the Arts Council is collaborating with local partners to secure the building's future as a cultural and community space. Watling Real Estate, appointed by the Arts Council, is currently inviting offers for the site, which has specific usage limitations.
