Netflix has acquired the screen rights to Belle Burden's "Strangers: A Memoir of Marriage" in a highly competitive bidding war, reportedly worth seven figures. The buzzy memoir, which chronicles Burden's experience of being left by her husband of 20 years after 20 weeks of the pandemic, has topped the New York Times best-seller list for nine weeks.
Gwyneth Paltrow is attached to star in and executive produce the adaptation, marking a significant career move for the actress. The script will be written by Heidi Schreck, the acclaimed playwright behind "What the Constitution Means to Me." Veteran producer Stacey Sher, known for her Oscar-nominated work on "Erin Brockovich" and "Django Unchained," is also on board.
The deal was brokered by UTA, representing both Burden and Schreck. Lighthouse Management + Media and CAA were instrumental in securing the rights for Netflix. Burden's personal story, detailed in a viral New York Times Modern Love essay before the book's release, has resonated deeply with readers.
