Bandai Namco Filmworks has officially announced Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, a new anime series scheduled for release in 2027. Esteemed writer-director Kenji Kamiyama, known for his work on Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, is leading the production. This marks a significant addition to the prestigious mecha franchise.
The series is set in a future where humanity expanded across the solar system thanks to three revelations from an alien object. However, less than a decade later, this object spawned a destructive ecosystem, leading to an event known as the Apocalypse. The story follows Ray Azumi, a boy born on the Moon decades after humanity abandoned Earth.
Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO is envisioned as a media-mix project, integrating with the upcoming video game Gundam Rogue Orbit. This action RPG, developed by Bandai Namco, will explore the Gundam universe a century after the anime's events and is slated for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam.
Director Kamiyama expressed excitement and challenge in creating a Gundam series outside established timelines, focusing on a fresh approach. Voice actor Takeo Otsuka will portray protagonist Ray Azumi, sharing his enthusiasm for the project's media-mix nature. The anime is produced by Sola Animation and Bandai Namco Filmworks.
