17 Apr
Summary
- Guadalajara Film Festival's LGBTQ+ strand marks 15 years.
- Premio Maguey has boosted social acceptance of sexual diversity.
- Mexico struggles with intolerance despite progress in queer cinema.

The Premio Maguey, Guadalajara Film Festival's (FICG) LGBTQ+ sidebar, is celebrating its 15th year with a special 'Queerciañera' event. Launched in 2012, it has become a pivotal platform for queer cinema in Mexico and Latin America.
Festival director Pavel Cortes emphasized the Premio Maguey's significant social contribution in legitimizing sexual diversity and queer culture. He noted that while progress has been made over 15 years, acceptance of sexual diversity remains a privilege, particularly in Mexico, which he described as an intolerant country with a high rate of hate crimes.
Premio Maguey began when queer topics were taboo in Mexico. Since then, national queer film production has flourished. This year's competition features 16 films, with seven being Mexican productions, vying for top awards. The festival includes a diverse selection of fiction, documentary, and short films, with a notable focus on transmasculine parenthood and non-binary experiences.
