Illustrations by Axel Scheffler, famously known for his work on The Gruffalo, are being auctioned to support children's literacy. Scheffler donated four of his color drawings after attending the Jersey Festival of Words' tenth anniversary celebration last September. The auction is being managed by Bailiwick Auctions and will accept bids from December 8th to December 15th.
Organizers of the Jersey Festival of Words highlighted the growing importance of providing books to families lacking the means to purchase them. The festival's recent tenth anniversary was notably successful, with a record number of books distributed to children attending its events. Donated second-hand books were particularly given to very young children during multilingual storytelling sessions.
Festival chairwoman Lucy Cotter expressed gratitude for Scheffler's support, emphasizing that gifting books to underprivileged children is a deeply meaningful aspect of their work. The funds raised from the auction of these beautiful illustrations are anticipated to make a substantial difference in their ongoing mission to promote reading among youth.
