In 1966, Capitol Records released a Beach Boys single, fearing the title "God Only Knows" would prevent radio play due to the inclusion of the word "God." Brian Wilson and Tony Asher, the song's writers, acknowledged the prevailing sentiment that such a word was unsuitable for pop songs unless in patriotic contexts. The label consequently relegated "God Only Knows" to the B-side of "Wouldn't It Be Nice," with minimal promotion.

This strategic caution resulted in the song barely registering on the Billboard charts in the United States, peaking at number 39. However, this business decision has aged poorly. "God Only Knows" is now widely acclaimed, frequently appearing on lists of the greatest songs of all time, including by Rolling Stone and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Ironically, the very element that caused concern—the use of "God"—contributed to the song's groundbreaking spiritual and reverent tone. Its innovative arrangement, featuring strings and layered vocals, was also uncommon for Top 40 radio at the time. The album it anchors, Pet Sounds, later influenced The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, underscoring the song's lasting impact.
