Summary
- Barry Pearl's 'gumdrop' insult in Grease was an unplanned improvisation.
- The original intended insult was an Italian slang term for 'nerd'.
- Pearl recently reunited with original Grease cast members for a screening.

Barry Pearl, known for his role as Doody in the 1978 musical film Grease, shared a surprising detail about a memorable scene. During the lead-up to the iconic "Summer Nights" song, Pearl improvised an insult directed at the character Tom Chisum.
Originally, Pearl intended to use the Italian slang term 'gavone,' meaning 'nerd' or 'stupid person,' a word his co-star Michael Tucci had used earlier. However, Pearl stumbled over his delivery, accidentally saying 'gumdrops' instead.
This flub, which has no real meaning as an insult, was retained in the final cut of the movie, becoming an unexpected moment for fans. Pearl has recently been involved in reunions with his original Grease castmates.
In June 2025, Pearl, alongside Didi Conn, Michael Tucci, Kelly Ward, and director Randal Kleiser, participated in a sing-along screening of Grease at the Hollywood Bowl. John Travolta also made a surprise appearance at the event, dressed as his character Danny Zuko. Grease is currently streaming on Paramount+.
